High tempo, heavy bass, and melodies that stay in your head forever. Although drum’n’bass was born in the British underground, today it fills stadiums worldwide. One of the main architects of this success is Nick Douwma, aka Sub Focus. For over twenty years, this London-based producer has been pushing the boundaries of electronic music, seamlessly blending underground energy with radio hits. How did a kid fascinated by 90s rave culture become one of the most prominent icons of modern electronic music?
When Nick Douwma took his first steps on the London club scene in the early 2000s, drum and bass was still a niche genre, confined to dark, basement spaces.
Everything changed in 2003 when his demo landed in the hands of Andy C – the head of the legendary RAM Records label. Released shortly after, the single "X-Ray" instantly became a club anthem, and Sub Focus's signature, highly melodic, and energetic sound defined a new era for the genre. Douwma proved that music built on fast tempos and heavy bass could retain its underground spirit while captivating crowds across the globe.
The breakthrough in the artist's career came with his self-titled debut album "Sub Focus" (2009), but it was his sophomore record "Torus" (2013), released four years later, that elevated him to global megastardom. Singles like "Tidal Wave" and "Desire" dominated the charts, proving that drum and bass possesses massive commercial potential.
Sub Focus became one of the first DnB producers to regularly headline the world's biggest electronic music festivals – from Tomorrowland to Glastonbury. His secret weapon became the flawless fusion of club energy with catchy, pop-infused vocals.
In recent years, Sub Focus has not only maintained his leading position but has also set new trends by drawing heavily on nostalgia for the golden era of electronic music. His highly acclaimed album "Evolve" (2023) and 2025's "CONTACT" serve as a tribute to 90s rave culture, delivered in a modern, pristine production style.
Collaborating with other scene giants – such as John Summit or Wilkinson – and touring globally as part of the Worship collective, Douwma proves that after more than two decades in the industry, he still has fresh ideas. Today, Sub Focus is no longer just a music producer, but an institution and a living legend who constantly redefines the boundaries of drum and bass music.
